Like the headline says, we’ve made a slight adjustment to my author talk at the NABJ Convention next month in Cleveland.
I’m still onstage alongside the incredible Coley Harvey of ESPN, and you can click on my previous post to see why he’s the absolute perfect person for this job. But the day and time are now as follows:
Thursday, August 7.
Noon.
Huntington Convention Center, Atrium Floor 2, Room 202.
Update your calendars accordingly.
Why the change?
Blame gmail, mostly. My account kept shunting important NABJ updates to may spam folder. I was assigned the Wednesday afternoon slot because I never received the messages asking me to choose a day and time. Then yesterday I double-checked my flight info, and realized we had a dilemma.
My flight is slated to land in Cleveland at 3pm on August 6. The author talk was scheduled to start just an hour later. That’s an impossibly quick turnaround. My window of time was tighter than the shrink-wrap on your favourite hip-hop star’s brand new plastic abs. I could have promised the team at NABJ that I would travel from the airport to the author talk in less than 45 minutes, but I’d have been lying to everyone — much like your fav actor turned rap star did in trying to convince us that shredded abs and flaccid arms can coexist in the same physique.
So I messaged NABJ, explained my bind, and asked for a later time slot. To their credit they made it happen, and moved me from Wednesday afternoon to mid-day Thursday. It’s a superior setup for a number of reasons.
First, it eliminates the all-out sprint from the airport to the convention center, in weather and traffic I can’t control. Some people might enjoy that type of stress. I’m not some people.
Second, and most importantly, the new schedule means I can use Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning to spread the word on site. Everybody’s invited, but they won’t know unless I tell them, which I’m going to.
In the intervening weeks I’ll promoting the event everywhere else I travel online. I’d say I hope to see you all there, but I’m done hoping. I know I will.
