TBGWT Ep 3023: Nnnnnnnnnnnn-word, we said it!

Quick post to remind you that when you’re an author, the press run never ends. Eleven months post publication I’m still running… not quite a victory lap, because that makes hustling a book sound triumphant, if not easy. It’s more like Sisyphus rolling the stone up the hill. Finish today and begin again tomorrow. Same task, same start line. Writing a book is a job; promoting a book is a job unto itself.

Thankfully, work doesn’t feel like work when you enjoy it, so I was excited and overjoyed to sit in on The Black Guy Who Tips podcast last week. I’ve never met Rod and Karen in real life, but I’ve been following since I joined Twitter 15 years ago, and they’re two of my fav people on the entire internet. I interviewed them at the tail end of the 2015 NFL season about the Cam Newton Effect. They’re Charlotte natives who are smart and funny and give good quotes, so it was a no-brainer.

And occasionally they’ll book me on their podcast — which has grown from a literal mom-n-pop spare time hobby to a full-fledged business. The whole franchise is a triumph of Black love, Black creativity and Black brilliance.

As for this week’s episode… I’ve embedded the YouTube link above, but you can also download and subscibe here, or anywhere else you get your podcasts. We talked writing and publishing and my life as a sitcom dad. We talked business and Black families, and the tension between art and craft and content. And, of course, because I literally wrote the book on Afro-Ameri-Canadian relations, we talked Drake vs Kendrick. Spoiler alert: we hate the way he says the word [REDACTED].

I had an awesome time, as always. Even after I recorded, I listened again to catch the jokes I missed the first time.

That’s a lot of jokes.

With Rod and Karen there always are.
